An extremist Syrian group may be planning to carry out a terrorist attack against Norway today (Monday), leading police to place armed guards at airports, train stations and borders.
Stena Line operates the ferry route between Oslo in Norway and Frederikshavn in Jutland, and has announced that all passengers will go through tighter security checks of passports or driving licenses.
Fjord Line, operating from Hirtshals, has also decided to increase baggage checks in Norwegian ports. DFDS seaways operates the Oslo ferry from Copenhagen, but neither Danish nor Norwegian authorities have demanded they take extraordinary security measures.
Gert Jakobsen, head of communications at DFDS Seaways told BT that security in general is very high. "We have a permanent terror security system on ferries and in ports that was introduced in 2004. It means that all passengers will go through control. No-one boards our ships without having their identity verified." He added that the crew was told to be extra alert and report any suspicious behaviour.
